Light Therapy Options for Acne Treatment

October 20, 2017 by Louanna

At least three different types of light therapy can benefit acne suffers: blue light therapy, red light therapy, and UV light therapy.

Blue Light Therapy

Red Light Therapy

red-light-therapy-led-laserStudies have found – and our experience has shown – that blue light acne treatment is even more effective when used in conjunction with red light. Red light speeds clearing, reduces inflammation and pain, prevents new scars, and  heals old scars over time.

UV Light Therapy

ultraviolet-uv-light-therapyLight therapy has been used for acne treatment for decades. Originally, UV light was commonly used by dermatologists, but UV treatments were abandoned as the UV scare gained publicity. However, both natural and artificial UV light can still be used to treat acne, and it works in two different ways:

  1. UV light kills acne bacteria quickly. In the summer months, 60 seconds of direct sun exposure per area is all that should be needed to destroy acne bacteria. Only 60 seconds in a low pressure tanning bed per day should also keep acne under control. Learn more about UV light therapy.
  2. Exposure to UVB produces Vitamin D3 in the skin. Vitamin D3 alone has been shown to be a potential acne cure. More about this in our article, “Is Acne a Symptom of Vitamin D Deficiency?”
